ABOUT

Valeria Montti Colque (SWE, b.1978, lives and works in Stockholm) is a Chilean-Swedish artist working in a range of expressions and media, often with collage-based sculptural installations assembled by paintings, drawings, photos, ceramics, textiles and objects. She graduated from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm in 2004 and has exhibited extensively in Sweden, Chile, Norway and Germany, in museums and art institutions as well in public space. Recently she was commissioned by Stockholm Region to produce two art pieces for the public transportation stations in the centre of Stockholm. Also, one of her installations Apu Mama Höjden was acquired by the Modern Museum of Art in Stockholm as part of their collection in 2022. She has had a solo show in Museo de Solidaridad Salvador Allende in Santiago de Chile in 2020. Valeria is working with the development of the exhibition project “Gunnel & Anita” in collaboration with Rossana Mercado-Rojas and curated by Ashik Zaman. This exhibition was first shown in BAS Konsthall commissioned by Järfällä Kommun in 2022, and is planned to be developed in two different new venues in 2023 and 2025.

Her installations become characters and sometimes costumes; gods, mythological figures, heroes and magical spirits, embodiments of human beliefs and with symbolic names from nature they all live side by side in these assemblages. Often working with and through her Chilean diaspora experiences and communities, her work resembles someone carrying her home. Assembled everyday found objects, costumes, artworks, and cultural debris become alive alongside the living. Collaboration is central to Valeria’s practice – other artists, musicians, performance artists, family and friends become part of creating her artistic world.

In 2016, an artist monograph, La Jardinera, was made in collaboration with art historian and writer Macarena Dusant, published by Dokument Press. The monograph is the first by a Swedish-Chilean artist, and deals with questions addressing diaspora conditions, love, grief, trauma, and gender power structures. The book can be ordered at Dokument Press.
